Hernia
Hernia is a condition when the contents of a body cavity protrude out of the membrane in which they are normally contained Hernias may not produce symptoms as they are asymptomatic and can cause slight to severe pain when complicated.A bulge or lump in the abdomen, groin, or scrotum that is easier to see when you cough and disappears when you lie down. Pain when straining, lifting, or coughing.
Hernia Surgery:
All hernias are caused by a combination of pressure and an opening or weakness of muscle or fascia; the pressure pushes an organ or tissue through the opening or weak spot and results in the condition of Hernia
The process of Hernia Surgery involves reducing the pressure, covering and providing support to the weak opening
Types of Hernia Surgery:
The two types of surgical process used to treat Hernia are as follows:
Traditional (open) hernia repair
Laparoscopic hernia repair

Umbilical Hernia is caused due to weakened opening in the abdominal wall, which should normally close before birth but fails to close completely.Ventral Hernia is a hernia that surfaces on any part of the Ventral surface of the human body.

Pre & Post Surgery Instructions:-
Patient will be assessed for the associated medical problems and given instructions according to that.
Patient may feel nauseated in the immediate post-operative period, and patient may even vomit which should not cause any worry. This generally gets over after few hours.
Patient is generally allowed to have sips of water immediately after the operation and liquids on day of operation. In case of vomiting the liquid intake may be stopped and restarted after 30 minutes. The liquids may include water / cold drinks / tea / coffee / milk / juices or some clear soups.
Patient is allowed to have normal home cooked meals of choice from the night. Patient should try to move the limbs and should sit up immediately after operation. Patient can go to the toilet on his own.
Patient will be discharged on the next day of operation unless there is some associated medical problems.
Patient is advised to visit again for follow up after 2-5 days when the dressings are removed. Patient should avoid wetting the dressings unless they are waterproof. After the removal of dressing, patient can have normal bath with soap and water.
In very few cases there may be some fullness felt at the operation site which may be due to seroma formation this should not bother patient because it is generally harmless. It can be aspirated.
